This day in Railroad History

August 21, 1882
The first California Southern Railroad train departed National City, California and arrived in Colton, inaugurating the CSR line. Fare was $6 one-way or $9 round-trip. Passengers remarked on the stark beauty of the Temecula canyon, and the newspapers boasted that seeing it was alone worth the price of a ticket. But rainstorms in February brought tremendous downpours, the result of the Krakatoa volcanic explosion half-way around the world, which spewed so much ash into the skies as to alter weather patterns all around the globe. Fallbrook experienced over 20 inches of rainfall, resulting in a total washout of the tracks through the Temecula canyon. The CSR suspended rail service to Temecula, and the effect on the company’s finances put them on the brink of bankruptcy. But the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad stepped in, providing enough capital to repair the link between Fallbrook and Temecula.

Tonight's Photo - Please send photos to photos@trainnews.org

The 611 was deactivated in 1994 when the Norfolk Southern Corporation ended the excursion program, and it was returned to the Virginia Museum of Transportation (VMT) in Roanoke in 1995, where she sat dormant for two decades. In June 2013 the VMT announced through the “Fire up 611” committee that 611 would be restored to operating condition. Sufficient funds were raised to complete the restoration, and on March 31st, 2015, the 611 was fired up for the first time in over 20 years for a test fire.

This photo was taken on the Sunday June 7th trip as the train passed the concrete grain mill at Marshall, VA, heading back to Manassas.
