This day in Railroad History

August 20, 2009
The Union Pacific Railroad inaugurated its new Kate Shelley Bridge spanning the Des Moines River in Iowa. The new bridge, which is more than 2,800 feet long and 190 feet high, replaces the previous Kate Shelley bridge which will remain standing. The bridge was designed for two trains to operate on the bridge at the same time at the maximum speed of 70 mph and features two tracks, 20 feet apart, set on a ballast deck that is supported by reinforced concrete towers and steel piles.
