This day in Railroad History

August 13, 1965
The remains of the Pacific Electric System were merged into the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. In 1898, Henry Huntington, nephew of Collis P Huntington of the Central Pacific, purchased the narrow gauge, Los Angeles Railway (LARy) known colloquially as the 'Yellow Car' system. In 1901 Huntington formed the sprawling interurban, standard gauge Pacific Electric Railway (the PE), known more familiarly as the 'Red Car' system, centered at 6th and Main Streets in Los Angeles. By 1910, the Huntington trolley systems stretched over approximately 1300 miles of southern California. At its peak, there were over 20 streetcar lines and 1,250 trolleys, mostly through the core of Los Angeles and serving such nearby neighborhoods as Echo Park, Westlake, Hancock Park, Exposition Park, West Adams, the Crenshaw district, Vernon, Boyle Heights and Lincoln Heights; and the 1902 acquisition of the Mount Lowe Railway.

The Rocky Mountaineer is a privately owned Canadian company that operates rail tours in British Columbia and Alberta. It is the busiest privately owned passenger rail service in North America, having transported over one million passengers since 1990. Rocky Mountaineer has over 75 railcars in its fleet, including 32 RedLeaf Service coaches built in 1954 by Canadian Car and Foundry which have been refurbished and upgraded and 16 GoldLeaf dome coaches which were custom-built for the Rocky Mountaineer by Colorado Railcar Manufacturing LLC in Fort Lupton, Colorado. The trains are pulled by a fleet of 17 diesels, all of which are over 30 years old and extensively renovated. This photo was taken on May 15, 2015 as an east bound Rocky Mountaineer train was on the Canadian National main high above the Thompson River at Spences Bridge, BC. Leading the 12 car train is GP40-2LW No. 8014, originally Canadian National No. 9633, built in March 1976.
