Almost Twilight. Steins, NM. Founded in 1880, the town was named after Army Major Enoch Steen, who was killed by a band of Apaches in 1873. How Steen was corrupted to Steins is not well documented. The town prospered after gold ,lead, silver and copper were discovered in the nearby Pelocillo Mountains. The Southern Pacific established a line in 1878. But there was a problem: Steins had no source of water, it was brought in by train. By the end of 1944, the railroad ceased operations at Steins station. The writing was on the wall, Steins would perish. The Espee offered to relocate all the inhabitants, and most left without their possessions. What remained was a ghost town. Several attempts have been made to open Steins as a tourist attraction, but that has not been successful. A few miles to the north over that grade crossing is the site of the Butterfield Stage Station in Doubtful Canyon.

A few more minutes until Twilight. A headlight appears. And then stillness returns to Steins.
