The Southwestern RR passes the New Mexico Historical Marker honoring Cathay Williams, a former female slave who successfully enlisted in the U.S. Army as a ‘Buffalo Soldier’. Take a moment to read the full story on the historical marker, it is an extraordinary tale of courage and determination. The marker is right along New Mexico highway 56. It is not known with certainty when Williams died and her final resting place is known only to God.
