An east bound Norfolk Southern loaded coal train eases upgrade slowly on track 1 as it passes a massive slide detector fence and ice-encrusted wall walls at Cassandra, PA on February 11, 2017. Leading the 88 car train is SD60E No. 6906, one of 131 such diesels on Norfolk Southern’s roster. Pushing hard on the rear are four hybrid SD40Es, rebuilt by NS for helper service on this line. This is on the Pittsburgh Line, which was originally the PRR’s main line through Pennsylvania. Winter Storm Niko swept through this area the previous day, depositing a half-foot of fresh snow and creating picturesque photo ops.
