This Date in Railroad History

September 28, 1933
The Wilmington & Western Railroad, owned by the Baltimore and Ohio RR, operated its last passenger train, a victim of the Great Depression. Shortly thereafter, the Pennsylvania Railroad discontinued its connecting service to Landenberg. With trucks and automobiles gaining in popularity, the W&W Landenberg Branch saw a sharp decrease in freight traffic, and the line was shortened to Southwood, Delaware in the early 1940s. After the demolition of the large Broad Run Trestle and growth of residential development after World War II, the line was again shortened to Hockessin, Delaware in the late 1950s. In the mid 1960s, Historic Red Clay Valley, Incorporated began leasing the tracks from the B&O on weekends, operating steam-powered tourist trains between Greenbank Station and Mt. Cuba. In the mid-1970s, the line's new owner, The Chessie System, filed for abandonment of the Landenberg Branch. With the line due to be demolished, fundraising began by HRCV. In August of 1982, the remaining 10.2 miles of the Landenberg Branch were purchased by Historic Red Clay Valley, Incorporated.Today, our railroad continues to operate regular steam- and diesel-powered tourist trains on our full 10-miles of track between Greenbank and Hockessin.

Amtrak’s Pennsylvanian, train 42, east bound on track 2 passes a slow moving east bound crude oil train on track 1 on Norfolk Southern’s Pittsburgh Line on February 11, 2017. This shot taken from the Route 53 overpass three miles east of Cresson, PA. Three miles to the east is Gallitzin tunnel. The Pennsylvanian is en route from Pittsburgh PA to Penn Station New York. Winter Storm Niko swept through this area the previous day, depositing a half-foot of fresh snow and creating picturesque photo ops.
