An Amtrak train on the CSXT Big Bayou Canot bridge near Mobile, Alabama derailed, killing 47 and injuring 103. This wreck occurred after a CSX swing bridge over the Big Bayou Canot was struck at 2:45 AM by a barge being pushed by the towboat Mauvilla whose pilot had become disoriented in heavy fog. The collision forced the bridge approximately three feet out of alignment and severely kinked the track. At approximately 2:53 AM, Amtrak's Sunset Limited train, powered by three locomotives en route from Los Angeles, California to Orlando, Florida with 220 passengers and crew, crossed the bridge at high speed and derailed at the kink. The locomotives slammed into the bridge superstructure, causing its destruction. The lead locomotive embedded itself nose-first into the canal bank and the other locomotives, as well as the baggage car, dormitory car and two of the six passenger cars, plunged into the water. The locomotives' fuel tanks ruptured upon impact, resulting in a massive fuel spill and a fire.

It’s critter time ! This creature is the product of Curry Rail Services in Hollidaysburg PA. Curry Rail Services occupies the former PRR Samuel Rea shops. The TP56 rides on one HTC truck from an SD40-2, and develops 400 hp which is fed to six traction motors. Curry has just completed an order of 27 ribbon rail cars for Amtrak and they are being switched into the yard for eventual pick up. Curry also fabricates various locomotive parts, including plows, fuel tanks and cabs. All very conventional compared to this critter.
