This Date in Railroad History

September 15, 1958
Central New Jersey Railroad train No. 3314 out of Bay Head bound for Jersey City inexplicably hurtled off an open drawbridge into Newark Bay. The first four cars plunged into the water just west of Bayonne. The fifth car, half of it submerged, dangled precariously over the edge of the bridge while the bay echoed with the screams of those trapped inside. Forty-eight people died, including retired Yankees all-star George "Snuffy" Stirnweiss, an Allied Chemical director, the mayor of Shrewsbury, an Army secret courier and a 4-month-old baby named Paul. Investigators never determined why train engineer Lloyd Wilburn, 63, blew past three warning lights, didn't see the center section was raised for a passing boat and never hit the brakes until the train was fewer than eight feet from the open draw.

I’m standing at a grade crossing East of London Ontario near the town of Komoka at milepost 7.3 on the Strathroy Sub of the Canadian National Railway. My trusty GPS shows that this place is N 42 degrees 58 minutes and W 81 degrees 23 minutes. It will help me find my way back to this place tomorrow. Via Rail Canada has some specially decorated locomotives to honor Canada’s 150 year anniversary. For some reason, today the Strathroy Sub is operating differently than the usual right handed running. And to capture the ‘in your face’ aspect of the scene, the camera will be held in place with a clamp and remotely triggered. There are indications that fall color in our neighbor to the north is not too far away. All indications are that it will be quiet a show.
