This Date in Railroad History

September 14, 1891
The Empire State Express became the world's first high-speed passenger train, when it covered the 436 miles between New York City and Buffalo in just 7 hours and 6 minutes (including stops). The train averaged 61.4 miles-per-hour, a new world speed record in rail travel, with an officially-recorded top speed of 82 mph, though observers claimed to have clocked the train at 112 mph. The Empire State Express, operated by the New ork Central Railroad, would gain worldwide celebrity, and its route would later stretch to 620 miles, with Cleveland, Ohio as its western terminus.

It’s Saturday afternoon in Gibbsland LA, and the Louisiana & North Western has shut down for the weekend. Once F9s trod here, but no longer. The line is now in charge of Patriot Rail. There are newer facilities at Homer LA. And the freight station at Gibbsland looks to be ready to collapse. A car occasionally drives by, and then silence returns.
