This Date in Railroad History

September 13, 1982
The ICC granted Southern Pacific Railroad permission to abandon the railroad between Niles, California, and Tracy after SP acquired trackage rights over the parallel Western Pacific track between Niles and Lathrop. The track saw some service after the ICC action, but a March 1983 mudslide stopped all trains and the rails were removed starting in early 1986. This track had been built in by the original Western Pacific (later owned by CP/SP) in 1869. Alameda County acquired the right of way, and worked out a lease with the Pacific Locomotive Association. PLA relaid rails on a portion of the roadbed and regularly runs trains through Niles Canyon.
