This Date in Railroad History

September 8, 1883
The Northern Pacific Railroad tracks were joined at Gold Creek, near the settlement at Garrison, Montana located some fifty-five miles west of Helena along the Clark Fork River, and ceremonies included a gold spike driven into the ground. Gold spike? Actually, it was a rusty battered iron spike; it had been first used to drive a spike at the beginning of the line, February 1870. Northern Pacific President Henry Villard brought in five trains filled with people to Gold Creek for the event. The NP line was the third US transcontinental railroad, but the first one north of the original CP-UP line.
