This Date in Railroad History

September 6, 1911
James J. Hill himself drove the final spike completing the Oregon Trunk Railroad in Bend, Oregon. Hill and EH Harriman were building competing railroads along the Deschutes River. Harriman's death in 1909 led the two sides to start working together. On 17 May 1909 the two sides agreed to end the conflict. The agreement saw the two companies share 12 miles of track to avoid the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, with a second stretch of joint line extending from Metolius to Bend. The two railroads combined had spent $25 million dollars to reach a town of less than 1,000 people.
