This Date in Railroad History

September 5, 1876
On September 5, 1876, at Lang Station, near Palmdale, California, Charles Crocker, the President of the Southern Pacific Railroad drove a gold spike to complete the San Joaquin Valley line. Southern California and Los Angeles were linked with San Francisco and the East via the CP-UP line through Ogden, Utah. A train from San Francisco reached Los Angeles the same day. Produce and manufactured goods could now be shipped more reasonably and quickly. A land boom began. The down side was that the directors of the Southern Pacific and Central Pacific had monopoly control of the major railroads in California, allowing them to control prices.

ALCOA, Aluminum Corporation of America, has reorganized its business model. Most operations take place at the North Plant. That is where the billets of aluminum are turned into sheeting of various thicknesses. The yard remains at the South Plant where box cars are staged for pick up by the Norfolk Southern local that runs to Alcoa from Knoxville. Over the years, the inter plant railroad has used a variety of motive power, including some locomotives from CLC, and lately, Larry’s Truck and Electric. The specialized cars used to haul the aluminum billets are on the rear of the train.

The train is almost back to the yard at South Plant and just a few hours before the total eclipse turns day into night if only for a couple of minutes.
