This Date in Railroad History

August 31, 1877
This was an exciting day in the towns of Billerica and Bedford, Massachusetts. People from near and far travelled to these rural communities to witness the opening of "America's First Two-Foot Gauge Common-Carrier Railway". The B&B was a novel engineering concept --one that promised to solve a local transportation problem and to do so relatively cheaply. However, traffic was insufficient, and the line failed. The 2 ft equipment was sold to the new Sandy River Railroad near Rangely, Maine. The Boston & Lowell Railroad in 1885 opened a standard-gauge extension of its Lexington Branch over the former B&B roadbed, which lasted until 1962. The 2 ft Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad is still operating today.

West Virginia Central Railroad’s ex-Western Maryland Railway BL2 No. 82 rolls south bound with a two-car train on ex-B&O Railroad trackage a mile north of Belington, WV on July 27, 2017. The RARE BL2 went light to their connection earlier to Tygart Junction to pick up the two cars at the WVC’s connection with the Appalachian and Ohio Railroad. Only 59 BL2s were built by EMD, the Western Maryland Railway had Nos. 81 and 82, which were used at their yard in Hagerstown, MD. No. 81 is at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, MD. This photo was taken from the shoulder of U.S. Route 250. This is the ONLY BL2 currently in regular revenue freight service in North America.
