This Date in Railroad History

August 30, 1991
Two Burlington Northern Railroad trains collided head on at milepost 85.55 north of Ledger, Montana, on the BN line between Great Falls and Shelby. The combined closing speed was 87 mph. After impact, fire ensued from spilled locomotive diesel fuel, burning locomotive units, two freight cars, and grass. Nine locomotive units and 22 cars were destroyed; 9 cars were damaged. Track damage, equipment replacement, and clean-up costs were estimated at $19 million. Three crewmen were killed, and four were severely injured. The northbount train had over-run its track warrant ordering a meet at Ledger. As part of the accident report the NTSB renewed its earlier calls for implementation of a positive train control system.

I thought that I would spend a few minutes in post trying to approximate the colors of totality. This scene isn’t far from the point of totality, though it is several hours from totality. This is the ALCOA inter plant railroad in Alcoa TN. At totality it became dark, but the light had a strange color, that I thought resembled a grey steel color. But there was still some muted colors, and the red on the switcher reflects that. I hope I got it close to right. And I’d like to see what others have done in totality.
