This Date in Railroad History

August 18, 1896
The last spike was driven on the Mount Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railway, running 8 miles from Mill Valley, California to the peak of Mt. Tamalpais. The railroad was powered by a succession of geared steam locomotives and had an average grade of 5%, with maximum grades of 7% at some points on the line. A popular option on the line was to ride uphill pushed by steam locomotive, then ride the "gravity cars" back down the hill. The locomotive was always on the downhill end of the train to prevent runaways. The gravity cars coasted downhill, with only a brake and operator.
