This Date in Railroad History

August 16, 1984
The first Chicago & North Western (C&NW) coal train moved out of Wyoming's Southern Powder River Basin coal field over a new line connecting the Burlington Northern built Powder River line. The ICC had granted C&NW rights to the Powder River based on their nearby "Cowboy Line", but that decrepit trackage was in no shape to haul coal trains. The nearly penniless C&NW financed their payments to BNSF and their new line construction with $325 million advanced from Union Pacific, which connected with the C&NW new construction. Not surprisingly, the C&NW was later absorbed by the Union Pacific in 1995.

There are only six HHP-8 [High Horse Power - 8000hp ] “Hippos” on the MARC roster. The commuter agency has contracted for Siemens “Chargers” that will be the end of electrified commuter rail service in the state of Maryland. These locomotives are captive to the Penn Line, which runs from Union Station in D.C. to Penn Station in Baltimore and beyond. The Chargers will offer flexibility for MARC, which operates the Camden Line to Camden Station in Baltimore and the line to West Virginia.

A MARC train lead by an HHP-8 slows for its stop at Bowie State on the Penn Line.

So, as electrified commuter rail enters its closing months lets give a hearty cheer for the HHP-8.

Hip Hip Hooray !
