August 14, 1923
Portland Oregon's Willamette Iron and Steel Works received a patent on the casting that carried the crosshead guides and supported the crankshaft of its new Willamette geared locomotive. The Willamette was based on the Shay manufactured by Lima Locomotive Works, but had many improvements. Key Shay patents had expired, and Willamette could legitamitely copy the engine, although they applied "modern" techniques, such as welded (vs bolted) boiler construction, and Walschaerts valve gear, while the Shay mainly used Stephenson valve gear. Five years later Lima responded by introducing their own improved mode, the West Coast Shay.
