This Date in Railroad History

August 11, 1970
The last train, the Birmingham Special, SR train No. 18 to Washington DC, pulled out of Chattanooga's "Gateway" - Terminal Station, the building was boarded up and the future looked bleak. The $1.5 million dollar Terminal Station had been built by the Southern Railway and opened in 1909, replacing the earlier Central Station. However, instead of being demolished, the 24 acre facility became a hotel complex, opening in May1973. It included 48 Pullman train cars divided into 96 rooms, and a 103 room Motor Inn. By 1976, the Chattanooga Choo-Choo averaged over one million visitors a year. The hotel has since expanded the convention center and added more hotel rooms. The property boasts a regularly operating Perley Thomas Car Works trolley built in High Point, North Carolina.

This photo of the Pennsylvanian knocking down the PL reminds me of the refrain from the lyrics of ‘Tea for Two’…”Nobody near us to see us or hear us….”
