This Date in Railroad History

August 10, 1972
The Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad was merged into the (largely parallel) Illinois Central Railroad to form the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. The Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad was a result of the reorganization of the New Orleans, Mobile & Chicago in 1917. The GM&O incorporated in 1938 to take over and merge the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad and the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, which it completed in 1940. The railroad also merged with the Alton Railroad in 1947.

Two excursions were operated on the second day of the convention, June 22nd. . The first excursion was a luncheon cruise aboard My Old Kentucky Dinner Train between Bardstown and Clermont, KY on the former Louisville and Nashville’s Bardstown branch. The second excursion was a chartered trip on the Kentucky Railway Museum’s trackage out of New Haven, KY. The equipment on My Old Kentucky Dinner Train was comprised of two diners and a kitchen car spliced in between, powered by a pair of ex-Southern Railway FP7s Nos. 6141 and 6138, now numbered 1940 and 1941.

This is the chartered My Old Kentucky Dinner Train west bound two miles east of Deatsville, KY, during a heavy downpour.
