This Date in Railroad History

August 9, 1912
The Steel Bridge across the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon opened. The bridge was built by Union Pacific Railroad and the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company at a cost of $1.7 million. The Steel Bridge is a through truss, double lift bridge. The lower deck can independently raise up to the base of the upper deck while the upper deck remains closed. Currently, its lower deck carries railroad and bicycle/pedestrian traffic, while the upper deck carries road traffic and light rail (MAX), making the bridge one of the most multimodal in the world. It is the only double-deck bridge with independent deck lifts in the world and the second oldest vertical lift bridge in North America. The average daily traffic in 2000 was 23,100 vehicles, 200 MAX trains, 40 freight and Amtrak trains, and 500 bicycles. (Note that the Wikipedia link below also has detail diagrams of the double lift mechanism.)

The Pennsylvania Railroad named many of their towers for places and manufacturing facilities. “Cork” was located in Lancaster PA near Armstrong Cork Co; “MG” was at Mid Grade as the line climbed from Altoona PA to Johnstown. ALTO was a busy place, controlling the comings and goings on the four track main line of the Pennsy. And here is the now closed “ALTO” that sits in the heart of Altoona PA. ALTO was shuttered on June 16, 2012.
