August 8, 1963
The travelling post office (TPO) "Up Special" train from Glasgow Central Station, Scotland en-route to Euston Station in London was robbed by a gang of 15 theives, in an event that was known as the "Great Train Robbery". They escaped with £2.6 million (about $48 million in today's dollars) from the "High Value Coach" where registered mail was sorted, including large quantities of money. The train consisted of 12 carriages and carried 72 Post Office staff who sorted mail. The bulk of the stolen money was not recovered, and only 13 of the gang were caught, 2 later escaping. One of the escapees, Ronnie Biggs, lived openly in Rio de Janeiro for many years, untouchable by British authorities. In May 2001, aged 71 and having suffered three strokes, he voluntarily returned to England and spent another 8 years in prison.
