August 3, 1995
Union Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Railroad announce their intent to merge. The merger would finish the acquisition that was effectively begun almost a century before with the purchase of the Southern Pacific by UP in 1901, until divestiture was ordered in 1913. Ironically, although Union Pacific was the dominant company, taking complete control of SP, its corporate structure was merged into Southern Pacific, which on paper became the "surviving company"; which then changed its name to Union Pacific. The merged company retains the name "Union Pacific" for all railroad operations.

The 2017 NRHS convention officially got underway on June 21st with a double-headed steam excursion from Chattanooga, TN to Summerville, GA over the former Central of Georgia Railway main. This trip was operated by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) and was powered by former Southern Railway engines Nos. 4501 and 630. This line is now operated by the Chattooga & Chickamauga Railway, a Genesee & Wyoming company, which provides freight service. Riders were bused the 133 miles from Nashville to Chattanooga, and then bused back to Nashville after the trip to save time. The two engines were turned on the turntable at Summerville and the train then deadheaded back to Chattanooga.

This photo was taken as the steam special exited 979 foot Missionary Ridge Tunnel, opened in 1858.
