This Date in Railroad History

August 1, 1984
The reconstruction of the Georgetown Loop Railroad is marked by the dedication of Devil’s Gate High Bridge by Colorago Governor Richard D. Lamm. Initially constructed as a subsidiary of the Union Pacific, by 1893 it had become part of the Colorado & Southern Railway’s subsidiary, the Colorado Central Railroad. The mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume lie 2 miles apart in steep, narrow Clear Creek west of Denver. Engineers designed a corkscrew route that traveled nearly twice that distance to connect them, gaining more than 600 feet in elevation. It included horseshoe curves, grades of up to 4%, and 4 bridges across Clear Creek, including the massive Devil’s Gate High Bridge. While the railroad continued to operate as a functioning freight railroad under the C&S, by the 1930s all of the mines and freight traffic between Georgetown and Silver Plume had dried up and by 1938 it was shutdown and the rails and bridges removed.

The Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad ran an unscheduled charter excursion for a senior group on its former Western Maryland Railway line out of Elkins, WV on Wednesday, July 26, 2017. The two-car passenger extra departed Elkins at 9:15 AM and went south to High Falls and back. Power for the special run was ex-Texas and New Orleans GP9 No. 283, now DGVR No. 6641, painted in an attractive blue and yellow Baltimore and Ohio Railroad scheme. This photo was taken as the excursion backed across the Tygart Valley River shortly after departing the Elkins depot. The DGVR runs several regularly scheduled passenger trains out of Elkins, as well as in Durbin and Cass, WV, and special charters. For details check their website at [mountainrailwv.com]
