This Date in Railroad History

July 25, 1927
The first centralized traffic control system in the world went in service between Stanley and Berwick, Ohio, on the Ohio Division of the New York Central Railroad. This system, invented by Sedgwick N. Wight of General Railway Signal, was a tremendous stride forward in improving facility and economy of train operation. Wight’s GRS inventions included Automatic Permissive Block Signaling (1911), Centralized Traffic Control (1927) and eNtrance-eXit (NX) push button interlocking control (1937). Mr. Wight received patents for these and other inventions, ultimately receiving 92 patents in his long career at GRS. The Ohio Division CTC machine was later moved to the Smithsonian Institute. (Note: the link is to a 3mb .PDF file that is the corporate history of General Railway Signal Co., originally compiled in 1954, updated 1979 & 2004. Amtraks “Pennsylvanian” rolls through Summerhill PA on the Middle Division of the former Pennsylvania Railroad. The impressive bridge with position light signals still show the way in June of 2017. There are numerous position light signals still in use, and in many cases, there doesn’t appear to be imminent replacements.

The railroad is busy here, and one won’t have to wait long for the next train. And yes, this is a manned helper district.
