July 18, 2001
At 3pm, an eastbound CSX freight train derailed 11 of its 60 cars while passing through the Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland. Four of the 11 derailed cars were hazmat tank cars. The derailed tank car containing tripropylene was punctured, and the escaping tripropylene ignited. The fire spread to the contents of several adjacent cars, creating heat, smoke, and fumes that restricted access to the tunnel for several days. A 40-inch diameter water main directly above the tunnel broke in the hours following the accident and flooded the tunnel with millions of gallons of water. Five emergency responders sustained minor injuries while involved with the on-site emergency. Total costs associated with the accident, including response and clean-up costs, were estimated at about $12 million. No definitive cause for the derailment was identified.

The 2017 NRHS convention officially got underway on June 21st with a double-headed steam excursion from Chattanooga, TN to Summerville, GA over the former Central of Georgia Railway main. This trip was operated by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) and was powered by former Southern Railway engines Nos. 4501 and 630. This line is now operated by the Chattooga & Chickamauga Railway, a Genesee & Wyoming company, which provides freight service. Riders were bused the 133 miles from Nashville to Chattanooga, and then bused back to Nashville after the trip to save time. The two engines were turned on the turntable at Summerville and the train then deadheaded back to Chattanooga.

Wednesday’s double-headed steam excursion to Summerville, GA included one photo runby, which was held at Rock Springs, GA, orchestrated by Steve Barry. Riders disembarked from the train and formed a line parallel to the track, the train backed up out of sight, and then came forward with plumes of smoke spewing from both engines. And this is the steam special blasting through Trion, Georgia.
