This Date in Railroad History

July 17, 1871
Construction of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company main line westward from Topeka,
Kansas had progressed far enough that the first passenger train reached Newton, Kansas on this date. In another 17 months the line would be at the Kansas-Colorado state line. In order to stimulate settlement on its Kansas lands, the Santa Fe railroad offered free or reduced rate transportation to potential buyers. Many settlers on railroad land, especially those from overseas, could bring all of their household goods at the company's expense.
