This Date in Railroad History

July 14, 1877
The great railroad strike of 1877 started in Martinsburg, West Virginia, in response to the cutting of wages for the second time in a year by the B&O Railroad. Striking workers would not allow any trains to roll until this second wage cut was revoked. The governor sent in state militia units, but the soldiers refused to use force against the strikers and the governor called for federal troops. The strike spread to Pennsylvania and the Midwest, increasing in brutality and intensity. On July 24, rail traffic in Chicago was paralyzed when angry mobs of groups of unemployed citizens wreaked havoc in the rail yards, shutting down both the B&O and the Illinois Central Railroads.

Sunday, I got a tip from a friend that EMDX 1602 was leading an autorack train, ASMKB-06, through South Central Texas. The hunt was on!

It’s hot in South Central Texas. Typically, we haven’t had a good rain in well over a month. The outside temperature hovered around triple digits. How hot? I didn’t want to know!
I was able to make good time on the local roads, and the train was in no great hurry to get to Kirby TX ahead of schedule. Could have been a ‘heat order’, I don’t know.
This is the straightaway just before Nolte Siding in Seguin TX. That’s the new Amazon fulfillment warehouse in the background with all those eighteen wheelers line up for “Prime Day”.
