June 22, 1918
The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus train was involved in a rear-end collision on the Michigan Central Railroad near Hammond, Indiana about 4am. Just beyond the city's eastern border at Ivanhoe, circus train was paused on a siding waiting to switch over to a track which would take it Hammond. However, the circus train was not completely clear of the main line, and right behind it was an empty troop train heading west to Chicago, Illinois. The engineer of the oncoming troop train did not see the circus train blocking his right of way, because he had just fallen asleep at the throttle. The troop train plowed full steam, some 60 mph into the circus train. A fire spread rapidly from the kerosene lanterns used for lighting the sleeper cars, as many of the Pullman cars of the circus train were constructed of wood. Of the 300 passengers on board the circus train 86 were killed and some 127 were injured. Many of the bodies were charred beyond recognition. A majority of those killed in this disaster are buried at the Showman's Rest in Chicago's Woodlawn Cemetery.

With many vintage former Pennsylvania Railroad color position light (CPL) signals rapidly being replaced with new Safe Train tri-color signals on the Pittsburgh Line, time is of the essence to photograph these iconic artifacts from the steam era. The older signals are being replaced to meet FRA-mandated requirements for Positive Train Control systems. Two such CPLs are attached to the signal bridge which spans tracks 2 and 3 three miles east of Cresson, PA. These CPLs are easily photographed from the Route 53 overpass, as seen in this image. On February 10, 2017 a west bound Norfolk Southern train of coal empties was photographed from this overpass as it ducked under the signal bridge. Winter Storm Niko swept through this area the previous day, depositing a half-foot of fresh snow and creating picturesque photo ops.
