This Date in Railroad History

June 19, 1954
Today was the last day of streetcar operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The leftover vehicles were unceremoniously burned in order to recover the scrap metal they contained. In 1890, the Minneapolis and St. Paul were connected with a railway along University Avenue, the first of four rail lines linking them together. A merger of the two city systems, the St. Paul City Railway Co. and Minneapolis Street Railway, formed the Twin City Rapid Transit Company. It went on a building spree, quickly doubling the amount of electrified track in the system. TCRT built some of the largest streetcars in the country, building street cars at its Nicolett Shops in 1898 after concluding that cars it was operating from Eastern manufacturers couldn't hold up to Minnesota's harsh winters. By 1906 they opened a manufacturing facility at its Snelling Shops where they not only manufactured cars for TCRT but also Chattanooga, Duluth, Seattle and Chicago among others.

CN manifest freight southbound toward New Orleans LA rumbles across the draw at Pass Manchac LA. It’s not a challenging venue at all. This was shot from the parking lot of the little bar and grill on the side road of I55 It’s a warm day, step inside and have something cold. When the siren blows and the bridge goes down, step outside and shoot. But don’t go away just yet. The City of New Orleans will be here soon.
