This Date in Railroad History

November 16, 1990
98 years of Lake Michigan railroad ferries came to an end as the S.S. Badger set sail on its final trip. By 1975, the C&O railroad, which owned the Pere Marquette Railway and its railcar ferries, was no longer interested in ferries. After a long ICC abandonment proceeding, the C&O sold its three remaining ferries to a new company, which struggled to keep the ferries afloat, but summer passenger and auto revenues were not enough to offset the minimal rail traffic and the company did not survive. Remarkably, the S.S. Badger was rebuilt into a "cruise ferry" to carry leisure passengers and their vehicles, and is in business today, operating with two Skinner Unaflow four-cylinder steam engines each rated 3,500 horsepower at 125 RPM.
