This day in Railroad History

August 19, 1974
The Santa Fe Railroad moved out of its station and former Harvey House in Brownwood, Texas, leaving it vacant, boarded up, and facing an uncertain future. The facility comprises two separate buildings which are joined by a covered loggia. The Harvey House Restaurant and Hotel was built in 1911 at the east end of the property in the Prairie style. The passenger station at the west end of the property was built in 1909, also in the Prairie style. The two buildings complement each other and form an interesting facility. The brown bricks which serve as the structural system as well as the facade composition were brought from Coffeeville, Kansas. In 2002, the facility was renovated under the auspices of the City of Brownwood.
