This day in Railroad History

August 14, 1924
The first US diesel locomotive was tested today. Built by GE, Ingersol-Rand and Alco, the demonstrator was originally expected to be used by railroads affected by cities "no steam [smoke]" ordinances. New York Central was the first to receive the diesel locomotive. After testing the diesel, the New York Central concluded that it could meet their needs to phase out steam in New York City. The orders generated by this prototype locomotive allowed GE and its partners to build a standard line of diesel electric switching locomotives on a production basis. Alco would build the body and mechanical equipment, then Ingersol-Rand would build and install the engine. Finally, General Electric would install the electrical equipment and test the locomotive. Two box cab models were offered: 300 hp - 60 ton and 600 hp - 100 ton.
