This day in Railroad History

August 11, 1970
The last train, the Birmingham Special, SR train No. 18 to Washington DC, pulled out of Chattanooga's "Gateway" - Terminal Station, the building was boarded up and the future looked bleak. The $1.5 million dollar Terminal Station had been built by the Southern Railway and opened in 1909, replacing the earlier Central Station. However, instead of being demolished, the 24 acre facility became a hotel complex, opening in May1973. It included 48 Pullman train cars divided into 96 rooms, and a 103 room Motor Inn. By 1976, the Chattanooga Choo-Choo averaged over one million visitors a year. The hotel has since expanded the convention center and added more hotel rooms. The property boasts a regularly operating Perley Thomas Car Works trolley built in High Point, North Carolina.
